Family Law Attorneys

Family law attorneys work in one of the most complex areas that the law has to offer.  Not only must family law attorneys stay on top of the law and handle their normal case load, but they also must act as counselor, friend, and shoulder to cry on when people are deeply hurting.  Family law attorneys handle much more than just divorce cases.

The truth is that many family law attorneys handle just about every legal issue involving families and their relationships with one another, including divorces, adoptions, annulments, marital issues, domestic partnership issues, custody and visitation issues, child support decisions, child support collections, alimony and other property settlements, and spousal abuse.

If you have a family law issue, or if you are trying to prevent a family issue from arising, contact a local family law attorney today.

Finding the Right Family Law Attorney

Family law attorneys often do run the meter on clients while crying on their couch about a cheating spouse.  However, they do not (and usually are not allowed to) charge contingency fees.  Most family law attorneys have no problem counseling and listening to the problems of others, as they are often naturally empathetic and caring people who enjoy helping others.

It is not advisable to try to take on such difficult and emotionally wrenching legal matters without hiring a local family law attorney.  Each state’s laws are different.  Prenuptial agreements are not always necessary, child support collection methods can get creative, and settlement negotiations in a divorce can get nasty.  So, check around and get a feel for who are the experienced attorneys and which ones may best fit your situation.

Family Law and Mediation

Many times, family law attorneys will also serve as a mediator, as well as an attorney.  Although they cannot serve in both capacities in the same case, and their fees are quite comparable to that of an attorney, mediation has its benefits.  It is generally quicker, cheaper (in the long run), and the decisions are private (as opposed to a court judgment).  Mediation should not be confused with arbitration, which is another form of ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution).
