Civil Rights Attorneys

Civil rights attorneys represent U.S. citizens who have been discriminated against or repressed from expressing certain rights which are guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.  When one's rights have been violated, he or she has a right to bring a lawsuit for injuries sustained.  Traditionally, many of the most historical civil rights cases have arisen due to discrimination against an individual because he or she falls into a certain protected class of individuals.

If you belong in one of the below protected classes, and you believe one of your constitutionally guaranteed civil rights has been violated, whether against some form of the government or some form of private entity, you may have grounds for legal action.  Even if you are unsure if your injury resulted from what might or might not be classified as a civil right, stand up for your rights today by contacting an experienced, local civil rights attorney.

Protected Classes

A class is considered protected if it meets certain requirements.  There are different standards of protection for each separate protected class, based upon certain factors.  There have been many cases decided by the U.S. Supreme Court on all of the following issues:

  • Race
  • Gender
  • Age
  • Religion
  • Disability, or other Physical Limitations
  • National Origin
  • Sexual Orientation

Common Civil Rights

In addition to knowing what classes are generally considered "protected," it is also important to know exactly what civil rights everyone is guaranteed.  The list below not only applies to those who are in “protected classes,” but instead are guaranteed to every individual.  This list could certainly expand much further, and civil rights do not stop here.

  • Freedom of Speech
  • Freedom of Religion
  • Freedom of the Press
  • Freedom of Assembly
  • Right to Vote
  • Freedom from Involuntary Servitude
  • Right to Privacy from Government Intrusion
  • Right to Equality in Public Places
  • Equal Access to Public Education
